The Namibia Roadbook Camp (NRC) has earned a reputation as one of the premier destinations for rally riders looking to hone their skills in big dunes and navigation. Every November, some of the best car and bike teams in the world make their way to Namibia to prepare for the grueling Dakar Rally. But what makes the NRC so special, and why do riders keep coming back year after year?

The NRC is more than just a training ground; it’s an experience that blends intense riding with camaraderie, adventure, and a laidback atmosphere. While the riding is taken seriously, the overall feeling remains fun and relaxed, fostering friendships that last a lifetime. Add in incredible food, a breathtaking location with the desert on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, and you have the perfect setting for one of the best rally training experiences in the world.

From a riding perspective, the training grounds are unique. The size and variety of dunes make this terrain unlike anywhere else on the planet. One fascinating characteristic is that Namibia is one of the few places in the world where dunes have three different slip faces due to constant wind changes. Unlike other dune fields where the dunes all slant one way, each dune in Namibia is distinct, providing an ever-changing challenge for riders.

What Will You Learn?

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced rally racer, the NRC offers invaluable lessons in desert navigation and riding techniques.

For Beginners:

- Mastering dune riding and understanding sand behavior

- Navigating using CAP headings in the dunes (HP/off-track)

- Hitting waypoints accurately and finding your way when “lost”

- Bike recovery techniques—how to pick up your bike and get unstuck with minimal      effort

For Experienced Rally Riders:

- Advanced navigation techniques tailored for the desert

- High-speed dune cresting and waypoint precision

- Opening the piste—leading from the front without any tracks to follow

Why is Dune Riding and Desert Navigation Crucial if you want to enter an international rally?

Having competed as a rider, raced internationally, organized events, and served as a race director, I have observed three key trends when it comes to dune sections in rallies worldwide:

High Attrition Rates – Once a race enters the dunes, attrition rates spike dramatically, often reaching 30%. You do not want to be part of that statistic.

Fear and Intimidation – Many riders visibly worry before entering the dunes. I used to be one of them. Fear in the dunes distracts focus, which significantly increases the risk of crashing, leading to mechanical failures or serious injury.

Mechanical Failures – Many riders push their bikes beyond their physical limits. Understanding how to manage your machine, how to navigate efficiently, and how to escape difficult situations without exhausting yourself or damaging your bike is crucial to surviving a rally.

The Namibia Roadbook Camp isn’t just about training; it’s about preparation, confidence-building, and developing the skills necessary to conquer some of the toughest terrain in rally racing. Whether you’re an aspiring rally racer or a seasoned competitor, NRC provides an unrivaled opportunity to refine your craft in one of the most spectacular environments on Earth.

For those serious about competing in an international rally, particularly Dakar, Abu Dhabi or Morocco, investing in high-quality dune training is non-negotiable. Namibia Roadbook Camp is the ultimate proving ground where riders transform their skills, sharpen their navigation, and gain the confidence needed to take on the world’s most challenging rally events.

This is not just training; this is an investment in yourself. It is equipping you with the tools to tackle any dunes a rally throws at you, giving you an edge over some of your fellow riders, who will be worried and intimidated by what you are about to face. It also vastly increases your chances of successfully navigating the dunes without having a mechanical issue or getting physically injured, ensuring that you finish the rally. A small investment in yourself with big future rewards.
